Brief History

The five-story Woolworth building is an excellent example of an Old Market landmark, occupying a prominent location at the northeast corner of 12th and Howard Streets in the heart of the Old Market Historic District. It was constructed in 1887 for James M. Woolworth (1829-1906), the first City Attorney of Omaha. Locally he was involved in the First National Bank, Union Stock Yards Company, served as one of the original trustees of the South Omaha Land Syndicate and was director of the South Omaha Land Company. Newspaper articles referred to the joint effort as the “largest (building) put up in the city.”
